Planned and conducted a detailed analysis of the tasks undertaken by crane operators at an international container terminal. The project involved conducting a Task Analysis of the crane operation, and holding interviews and focus groups with various operators. A postural risk assessment of the operators highlighted a requirement for engineering and administrative controls to reduce the risk factors for injury. The assessments also highlight a limited Situational Awareness of the operators. Suitable controls were identified, involving a redesign of the operator cabin, controls and seating. An evaluation of the implemented controls demonstrated a reduction in MSDs and improved productivity of operators.
